4059 - Leave Without Pay


Leave without Pay


The board of education contracts with each teacher to provide at least 184 day​s of service each school year.  Teachers are expected to work each of the days that school is in session, including in-service days. Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement negotiated with the West Point Board of Education, each teacher is provided with sick leave, bereavement leave and personal leave.  This policy does not address leave under those provisions.


Absent extreme circumstances, teachers will not be permitted to be absent beyond the days of leave provided by the district's collective bargaining agreement, regardless of whether those additional days are with or without pay.  The district will not grant additional unpaid leave days for personal travel.


In the unusual event a teacher is granted additional days of leave at the discretion of the superintendent without pay, the district will deduct the total cost to the school district if any days are taken without pay. The amount will not be pro-rated over the course of the contract and the amount will be deducted from the currents month’s salary.

Example A:

Teacher with a 1.08 Index, salary: $ 36,936 (1/184) = $200.74

Cost to district including all benefits: $64,608 (1/184) = $351.13  This will be the amount deducted.


Example B:

Teacher with a 1.76 Index, salary: $ 60,192 (1/184) = $327.13

Cost to district including all benefits: $91,087 (1/184) = $495.03  This will be the amount deducted.
