September 21, 2018

Cadets serve way to victory

By: Andrea Hoffman and Abby Kaup

Serving 16 aces, the Lady Cadets defeated the North Bend Central Tigers last night for the first time since 2008.

After falling to the Tigers in the first set 25-22, the Lady Cadets battled back to beat North Bend Central three sets to one 27-25, 25-15, 25-13.

A key factor in the Lady Cadets’ victory was their serve game. As a team, the Lady Cadets racked up a total of 16 ace serves. Leading the team, Ashton Troyer, a senior defensive specialist, had six aces. Behind her, Andrea Hoffman, a senior defensive specialist, served 3 aces throughout the match.

Taylor Shepard, assistant coach, believed that serving played a huge part in the Lady Cadets’ success. She said “I was really impressed with the girls’ mental toughness last night. They battled back after a tough first set and used their serving abilities to sway the game in their favor.”

Attacking was another major component that contributed to the Lady Cadets’ win. Sidney Swanson, sophomore outside hitter, had 19 kills. Swanson now has 150 kills on the season.

Brooke Haase and Kendra Paasch, both seniors, each had seven kills.

Conley Straight, the varsity head coach, said “We showed desire and dedication, and we played with discipline. We fought back, especially being down 8-1 and winning the second set. It gave us the momentum we needed for the third and fourth set.”

At the net, the Lady Cadets had 14 blocks, the most so far as a team this season. Haase had seven blocks. Rachel Groth, sophomore middle hitter, followed shortly behind with five blocks.

The Lady Cadets’ play next Tuesday in a home triangular against the Wayne Blue Devils and the Arlington Eagles. The first match starts at 5:30.
