During this time of social distancing, we are all trying to busy ourselves. Whether that be making masks, walking the dog, or binge watching Netflix, we are all looking for that now missing brain stimulation we received daily. Personally, I have found several ways to keep myself busy.

One way I busy myself is keeping up with my dance classes. I am a dancer at the West Point Dance Company, and my teacher, Michaela Graybeal, has done a fantastic job of keeping us all on track. Even though there is a chance our recital will get canceled, Michaela has made a point to continue teaching classes. Every week she holds zoom meetings to teach and catch up with her students. We go over what needs to be perfected, and we run through our dances several times. I practice my dances by myself at least every other day, if not daily. This gives me a chance to get some exercise and be outside. Dancing over zoom might not be as enjoyable as dancing in an open studio, it is an effort I greatly appreciate.

Another way I am straying from boredom is keeping a routine. To do this, I have been checking for new school assignments every other day, and make sure I finish the work as soon as it is assigned. I also keep up with my interests such as reading and drawing. I have recently started reading Coraline and have been learning how to paint jellyfish. Also, I have made an at home workout for myself. I make sure I do at least 200 squats a day mixed in with a variety of exercises such as crunches, stretches, and leg lifts. This mixed with my dancing keeps my body active while stuck at home. Another thing I do to keep a routine is making lists. I love the feeling of finishing a to do list, so I make a new one every night. The chores on it might include: shower, read 2 chapters of my book, do homework, vacuum, take out trash. Listing the things you need to get done motivates you to do them and keeps you from procrastinating.

One last way I stay occupied is finding new hobbies or rekindling old passions. Sometimes we forget how relaxing it can be to have fun and do something for ourselves. I had lost my love for watching movies and playing games. To fix this, I watched the X-Men series and played Scrabble with my siblings. Also, my family and I play Minecraft together at least once a week. A new hobby I have found is cooking. My mom has either me or one of my two siblings pick a meal to cook every Thursday night. This week I will be cooking Mediterranean garlic shrimp with Spanish rice. I have also made brownies and helped make a cake for my dogs birthday.

This is a weird time for all of us, but it is important to keep moving forward in life. We shouldn’t shut down just because we can’t do as much as we used to. Hopefully, one of these ideas motivates you to keep moving forward.
